PD Editorial: Sonoma County’s voter rolls are shrinking. Why?

Published Friday May 20

Sonoma County has 245,791 registered voters, according to the most recent report from the secretary of state.

That’s 70.56 percent of those who are eligible to vote, compared to 64.6 percent for the nation and a statewide registration rate of 70.08 percent.

At first glance, the local numbers aren’t bad.

But drill a little deeper, and you see that it’s the county’s lowest registration rate in at least sixteen years, and 25 of California’s 58 counties score higher.

Frustration with government and doubts about the impact of a single vote are common themes in USA political discourse. There’s a strain of that here, too.

The disappointing voter registration numbers are confirmation.
